Judith E. Tintinalli Award for Outstanding Contribution in Education - Susan B. Promes, MD, MBA, FACEP

Susan B. Promes, MD, MBA, FACEP, is a tenured professor at Penn State University Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and has served as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine since 2014. She has dedicated her career to emergency medicine and educating future physicians and emergency medicine leaders. 

Dr. Promes is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where she received her bachelor’s degree with a double major in Biology and Spanish and a minor in Education. In 1991, she graduated from Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., and continued her emergency medicine residency at Alameda County Medical Center - Highland General Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident. She was recruited and hired as faculty. In 2001, Dr. Promes was selected as the inaugural Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director and Director of the Medical School Capstone course at Duke University. She was later recruited to the University of California at San Francisco, where she served as Vice Chair for Education, the inaugural Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director and Director of Curricular Affairs for Graduate Medical Education. 

Her scholarly work has centered around topics related to EM medical education and clinical guidelines for practicing emergency physicians. In addition to numerous peer-reviewed publications, speaking engagements and committee service, Dr. Promes has edited multiple McGraw Hill board review books to prepare physicians for the emergency medicine board exam. She served on the Emergency Medicine RRC and currently is on the Board for the Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine. Promes directed the popular ACEP Teaching Fellowship for more than two decades. 

Dr. Promes is an internationally recognized leader in academic emergency medicine and was chosen by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine to be the editor of their new journal entitled Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training. The journal debuted in January 2017 and has developed into a respected and frequently cited journal in the field of medical education. Dr. Promes was the recipient of the ACGME Courage to Teach Award and the 2020 Hal Jayne Excellence in Education award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. 

Dr. Promes is the wife of Mark Haynos, an emergency medicine nurse and is the proud mother of two sons, Alex Haynos, EMT, CNA, and Lt. Aaron Haynos.

The Judith E. Tintinalli Award for Outstanding Contribution in Education is presented to an ACEP member who has made a significant contribution to the educational aspects of the specialty.
