Honorary Membership Award - James H. Slaughter, JD

Jim Slaughter has served as ACEP Parliamentarian since 2001. He is an attorney and President of Law Firm Carolinas. Mr. Slaughter is a Certified Professional Parliamentarian-Teacher, Professional Registered Parliamentarian, and past President of the American College of Parliamentary Lawyers. He has served as Parliamentarian to many of the largest associations in the world. Mr. Slaughter has written four books on running effective meetings, including two updated for the new Robert’s Rules: “Robert’s Rules of Order Fast Track” and “Notes and Comments on Robert’s Rules, Fifth Edition.” Both books have been selected by Publisher’s Weekly as “Editor’s Picks,” and Notes and Comments received the Phifer Award from the National Communication Association.

In addition to his professional work, Mr. Slaughter has led many civic and charitable organizations. He has been recognized annually by the Bar Association for his pro bono activities and by NC Lawyers Weekly as a past Leaders in the Law Honoree. The Governor of North Carolina has awarded Mr. Slaughter the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the state’s highest civilian honors. In 2023 Lawyers Weekly recognized him in its initial class of eleven “NC Legal Icons.”

Mr. Slaughter and his wife, Tamara, recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary and are parents of three adult sons, Freeman, McKinley and Wyatt. When not working, his favorite spots are hiking deep in the woods or kayaking on a river.
