Council Meritorious Service Award - Thomas J. Sugarman, MD, FACEP

Thomas J. Sugarman, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, is an emergency physician currently practicing in Indiana and is the Senior Director of Government Affairs for Vituity. He has been a member of the ACEP Council since 2006 and on the Steering Committee from 2022-2023. He is Past President of California ACEP, which honored him with the Walter T. Edwards Meritorious Service Award and the Chapter Service award. 

Dr. Sugarman served as Chair of the Emergency Medicine Policy Institute (EMPI) and of ACEP’s State Legislative and Regulatory Committee. He is a long-standing member of Emergency Practice Committee. Currently, he chairs EDPMA’s Tact-C workgroup addressing NSA regulatory and legislative issues and serves as Treasurer of EMPI. Dr. Sugarman also is Past President of the Alameda Contra Costa Medical Society and past Co-Chair of the East Bay Safe Prescribing Coalition. 

Dr. Sugarman graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He attended medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating with honors. Dr. Sugarman completed his emergency medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA and is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). He is proud to be a Fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians and of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. 

Dr. Sugarman moved from Berkeley, Calif., in 2022 and now lives in Wilmette, Ill., with his daughter Alexis (15) and son Grant (13). He enjoys traveling, playing ice hockey and snowboarding. 

About This Award

The Council Meritorious Service Award is presented to a member of the College who has served as a councilor for at least three years and who, in that capacity, has made consistent contributions to the growth and maturation of the ACEP Council. The ACEP Council is the forum in which chapter and section of membership representatives both elect and provide guidance to the Board of Directors.
