Council Horizon Award - Sophia Spadafore, MD

Sophia Spadafore, MD is currently serving as the inaugural Health and Public Policy Fellow at The Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine and works clinically at Mount Sinai and Elmhurst Hospital Center. She previously served as Chief Resident in The Mount Sinai Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency. She has a strong interest in health policy and currently serves on the American Medical Association Council on Legislation, as well as a resident and fellow section Delegate for ACEP to the AMA House of Delegates. She was appointed to the EMRA Board of Directors in 2019 to serve as the EMRA Representative to the AMA, as well as the parliamentarian for EMRA's representative council.

In her role on the EMRA Board, she served as an ACEP Councillor, and helped transform the way EMRA approached Council. She is now on the ACEP YPS Governing Council and serves as their Alternate Councillor, similarly working with the GC to increase the impact of the YPS at Council. Throughout her time at Council and in organized medicine, she has always had a strong interest in mentoring new members, and including as many voices as possible when decisions are being made. 

Dr. Spadafore is completing an internship at the US Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 2 office where she has studied health disparities in Puerto Rico and access to naloxone, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Political Science as part of her fellowship. 

About This Award

The Council Horizon Award is presented to an individual within the first five years of council service who demonstrates outstanding contributions and participation in Council activities. The award is given as needed, not necessarily annually.
