ACEP members and physicians who have worked with him on committee and work groups say Richard Dr. Shih, MD, FACEP, has a positive attitude and a natural ability to motivate volunteers. When he led the ACEP/PALTmed Geriatric Asymptomatic Hypertension Work Group, the final product was praised for its quality and was delivered on time to the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation program. Known for his professionalism, Dr. Shih led the creation of the ACEP Naloxone Policy Statement after several challenges presented themselves during the work.
Dr. Shih was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and completed a five-year accelerated medical-premedical program at Pennsylvania State University-Thomas Jefferson Medical School in 1988. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Maryland, an Emergency Medicine residency at the Medical Center of Delaware, and a Medical Toxicology fellowship at the New York Poison Center, Bellevue-NYU Medical Center.
The author of more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 20 book chapters, Dr. Shih also has served as an editor for three medical books.
ACEP has recognized Dr. Shih for numerous teaching awards, including the National Faculty Teaching Award. He also received the Educator of the Year Award from the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. After serving as the Emergency Medicine Program Director at Morristown Medical Center for 19 years, Dr. Shih recently took over leadership of the Division of Emergency Medicine at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. He is Professor of Integrated Medical Science in the Department of Integrated Medical Science at FAU.
