Diann Krywko, MD, FACEP, and Rita A. Manfredi-Shutler, MD, FACEP, are pioneers in transforming the conversation around physician well-being. They shifted the focus from traditional wellness practices like yoga, meditation, and nutrition to addressing the root causes - the systemic issues within health care that directly impact the well-being of individual providers.
Their signature work, the 2nd Edition of *From Self to System: Being Well in Emergency Medicine,” builds on more than two decades of ACEP’s wellness efforts, evolving from printed guides to an expansive electronic resource. The guide confronts the unique stressors and moral injuries emergency physicians face, offering practical solutions to navigate systemic challenges and stay well throughout their careers.
Their leadership in advancing physician well-being also played a pivotal role in the Well-Being Committee’s 2023-2024 objective to create an ACEP Policy Statement on general principles and expectations for a well workplace. As Co-Chairs of the subcommittee tasked with drafting this policy, Drs. Krywko and Manfredi utilized the guide’s insights to shape and inform the proposal. The policy was approved by the ACEP Board in April 2024 and addresses the systemic challenges emergency physicians face, offering strategies to enhance career fulfillment and support well-being in the workplace.
Drs. Krywko and Manfredi’s leadership in physician well-being has earned national attention. The American Medical Association recently reached out to ACEP to collaborate on expanding the AMA Steps Forward program’s resources. This partnership highlights ACEP’s role as a leader in addressing the unique needs of emergency physicians, where burnout is prevalent. Recognizing the value of ACEP’s work, the AMA sought permission to collaborate to enhance physician wellness efforts across the country.
This collaboration underscores ACEP’s commitment to improving physician well-being on a national scale.
