CMS Proposal Includes ACEP-Developed Measures for Geriatric Care

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing to adopt the Age-Friendly Hospital Measure, as part of the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS).

This measure was developed by ACEP in partnership with the American College of Surgeons and Institute for Healthcare Improvement and spans medication management, frailty screening, social vulnerability, and other areas where emergency physicians manage and inform high-yield interventions.

The new measure will encourage hospital systems to change the way they approach care for older patients and helps define caregiver goals from immediate treatment to longer-term care by incorporating ACEPs Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) framework among other principles from the partner organizations.

The CMS proposal calls for adoption of this measure for the Hospital IQR Program Measure Set beginning with the CY 2025 reporting period/FY 2027 payment determination.

A more detailed summary of emergency medicine specific IPPS elements is in development.

ACEP members and programs are driving changes at the highest levels that can improve the adoption of best practices, enhance metrics, and reshape patient care.
