Currently 6.7 million Americans are living with dementia, and this is expected to increase to 14 million by 2060. Persons with dementia visit the emergency department (ED) at higher rates than older adults without dementia, have unique care needs in the ED setting and are at higher risk of harm from hospitalization. Despite the prevalence of dementia in the emergency setting, most EDs are ill-equipped to care for persons with dementia. Across the world there are initiatives to make our communities “Dementia Friendly.” This course will discuss how to optimize care of persons with dementia in the ED setting and strategies to make your ED dementia friendly. It is designed for emergency clinicians and administrators looking to improve emergency care delivery to persons with dementia and will include didactics covering communication, management of agitation, and avoidable errors in care, as well as presentations from emergency departments who have implemented dementia-friendly care processes.
