About the Author
Jon Huddy, AIA, has participated in the analysis, planning, and design of more than 325 emergency departments across the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. While an architect by training, his emergency department design experience includes a deep understanding of strategic planning, technology integration and how the physical environment can be shaped to support lean operations; allow for efficient staffing and provider coverage; keep the staff and patients safe; and help deliver successful outcomes that result in elevated patient and staff satisfaction scores. His designs have accommodated emergency departments as small as 6,000 annual visits in rural areas and complex medical center emergency departments as large as 200,000 visits.
As president of Huddy HealthCare Solutions, LLC, Mr. Huddy personally leads each emergency department engagement, whether it be for emergency department strategic planning, operational assessment, master planning, and/or architectural design services. He earned a Master of Architecture degree from the Clemson University Architecture for Health Studio in the mid-1980s.He also completed the American Institute of Architects/American Hospital Association Graduate Fellowship in Health Facility Design. Since the early 1990s, Mr. Huddy has focused on the specialty of emergency department consulting and design and has teamed with hundreds of hospitals, physician groups, architects, and builders to deliver successful emergency department design solutions.
“Huddy,” as he has been known since grade school, brings a passion for emergency department design, a commitment to including caregivers throughout the design process, and a humorous, energetic presentation style that has allowed him to develop close and lasting relationships with emergency department caregivers around the world. About the Editor
Tracy G. Sanson, MD, FACEP, is an emergency physician with more than 20 years of experience in emergency medicine education, emergency department management, and leadership. She was the director of the Division of Global Emergency Medical Sciences (GEMS) at the University of South Florida and is Co-Chief Editor of GEMS Journal of Emergencies, Trauma, and Shock.
Dr. Sanson has served in several and varied leadership positions with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), the Council of Residency Directors (CORD), and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).She chairs the College’s Educational Meetings Subcommittee and is a member of the ACEP Speaker’s Bureau and the 911 network. She has been a member of the ACEP faculty for many years, including the ACEP Teaching Fellowship and the Emergency Department Directors Academy. Dr. Sanson received the National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award in 2006.
Tracy has held director positions with the US Air Force, the University of South Florida, and TeamHealth for the past 20 years. She completed her medical degree and residency training at the University of Illinois at Chicago .She has served on TeamHealth’s Medical Advisory Board, Patient Safety Office Division, and as faculty in their leadership courses. Dr. Sanson heads her own consulting firm, specializing in emergency department team and satisfaction assessments, leadership training, personal development/coaching, and branding. She has consulted and lectured nationally and internationally on administrative and management issues, leadership, professionalism, communication, patient safety, brand development, personal development, women’s issues, and emergency medical clinical topics for a wide range of health care organizations.

ACEP solicited case studies from its membership and more than 50 health care architecture and design firms. An editorial panel chose 27 that reflect a variety of innovative approaches to solving challenges of patient throughput and operational efficiency. Those 27 cases are published in the print edition and will be posted on this companion website, along with several others that were submitted before and after the print edition was released.
About the Case Studies Editors
James Lennon, AIA, is a Team ED member at HKS Inc. Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at California Polytechnic University and a Master of Science in Architecture at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is an internationally known emergency department design specialist. He speaks frequently on emergency department design nationally and internationally. Jim created and teaches the well-respected “ED of the Future” course at Harvard University that welcomes architects, physicians, and health care administrators into the same classroom. He pioneered the design and use of discrete event simulations in emergency department design. Jim recently won an American Institute of Architects award for innovation in health care design.
Michael Pietrzak, MD, received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa School of Medicine and completed a residency in emergency medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. He has held academic positions at Georgetown, George Washington University, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. Mik served on the American Institute of Architects committee for Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities. He was a founding director of the ER One Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and before that directed the federally funded Project ER One initiative to develop design features, concepts, and specifications for an all-risks medical facility. Mik is the founder and principal of Knowledge Management Solutions, chief medical adviser for HKS Team ED, and a senior fellow for the MedStar Institute for Innovation.
David Vincent, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP, is a principal and director of Team ED at HKS Inc. He is accredited by the American College of Healthcare Architects and is a US Green Building Council LEED® Accredited Professional. Dave earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has more than 30 years’ experience programming, planning, and designing emergency departments all across the United States. His experience developing emergency departments—from community hospital renovations to academic medical center replacements—has enabled him to effectively and efficiently define the design-specific challenges unique to each project. But it was a personal experience as a frantic parent that made Dave realize the importance of wayfinding and design in emergency departments. This firsthand understanding provided him with additional insight on creating the best possible emergency department wayfinding and environments.
