Public Relations Director

DEPARTMENT Public Affairs
BASIC FUNCTION Plans, directs, and evaluates the activities and staff of the Public Relations department by developing, recommending, and implementing goals, objectives, budgets, structure, and operational procedures for the department. Oversees development and implementation of a comprehensive public relations program to achieve the strategic objectives of ACEP and to elevate and protect the brand image of emergency physicians and the organization.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Create public relations strategies that enable ACEP to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the national news media and key influencers such as Congress, the White House and Administration policymakers.
  2. Develop and oversee implementation of the annual strategic communications plan; prioritize external communications efforts; organize the public relations budget to support with funding.
  3. Provide communications advice to College leadership, chapters and staff with analyses and recommendations about issues and strategic goals.
  4. Develop and implement the organization's crisis communications plan to protect the image of emergency physicians and ACEP. Make decisions and employ tools to target effective solutions to negative news stories and communications problems.
  5. Coordinate customized strategic plans on behalf of ACEP's president, CEO and other leaders — manage multiple activities, coordinating among all stakeholders.
  6. Direct national public education campaigns on behalf of ACEP to reach targeted audiences and to accomplish strategic objectives. Create and ensure accuracy of educational materials (print, broadcast and social media) to inform policymakers, Hill staff and the general public about ACEP's positions. Direct ACEP activities with corporate leaders who are sponsoring joint public education campaigns. Develop positive relationships with corporate staff to promote future funding.
  7. Conduct marketing campaigns to the general public (including Spanish speaking audiences) to reach target audiences and to promote emergency physicians as medical specialists. Develop materials and website presence.
  8. Oversee and promote ACEP’s website for the general public (EmergencyCareforYou.org).  Make content decisions and direct the design, development and posting of content; ensure accuracy.  Oversee and direct ACEP’s Newsroom, a separate microsite from ACEP.org. Manage and oversee design, development and posting of content, including ACEP’s positions on critical issues; ensure accuracy.
  9. Oversee the communications activities of ACEP’s Spokespersons’ Network.
  10. Conduct focus group and polling research to develop ACEP messaging for external audiences that will be communicated by Board of Directors and ACEP spokespersons and used to measure success of programs.  Coordinate the promotion of messages by Board of Directors, chapters and spokespersons to use in achieving ACEP strategic objectives.
  11. Plan, coordinate and oversee training for ACEP’s Board of Directors and spokespersons in communicating with external audiences.
  12. Develop and oversee external; social media activities.
  13. Ensure consistency of messaging between external and internal communications.  Provide content to internal communications staff regarding the activities of the Washington, DC, office.
  14. Conduct proactive media relations activities and develop relationships with national health policy reporters.  Maintain confidentiality of relationships and sources when required.  Respond to inquiries from national, trade and consumer press, and coordinate ACEP responses to meia requests for interviews.
  15. Plan and coordinate press events, write press releases, editorials, fact sheets, talking points, letters to the editor and speeches. Maintain confidentiality of embargoed materials.
  16. Oversee promotion of Annals of Emergency Medicine publicity, including monthly bi-weekly news releases, interview and plan publicity strategy with Annals staff, editorial board and authors.
  17. Contract with and provide day-to-day management of public relations consulting staff.
  18. Provide staff support to the Public Relations Committee and to sections as assigned. . Coordinate review and make recommendations for ACEP’s participation in campaigns with corporate sponsors, ensuring compliance with ACEP’s policies for non-endemic and endemic partnerships.
  19. Attend business and educational meetings as assigned.

Board members; PR committee members; ACEP members including the Spokesperson’s Network; chapter staff and officers; national health policy reporters, state and local news media, social media, trade media, health care policymakers, corporate senior staff and communications staff, communications directors and senior staff of other associations, communications directors and other staff on Capitol Hill, leadership of consumer organizations, staff of medical and advocacy organizations consultants

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field or equivalent related experience

  2. Five years managing public relations programs or agency accounts with an emphasis on media relations to include social media program and website oversight, strategic planning and budgeting, crisis communications; supervision; thorough understanding of national print and broadcast operations

Other Desired Qualifications

  1. Understanding of health policy and emergency medicine issues

  2. Ability to communicate complex medical jargon into layperson’s language

  3. Experience working in an association

  4. Demonstrated ability to initiate and manage complex projects simultaneously, including the ability to respond successfully under deadline pressures

  5. Brand management experience

  6. Excellent writing and verbal communications skills
