Other groups with a focus of Tactical and Law-Enforcement Medicine
Because Tactical and Law Enforcement Medicine brings together medical professionals with those from military and law enforcement, a variety of organizations are relevant to TaLEM. These organizations present different opportunities in creating policy, research, and education in this space. This list is not complete – over time we should be collectively adding to the list.
International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)

“The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), as the world’s largest and most influential professional association for police leaders, is committed to advancing the safety of communities worldwide.” IACP has a Physicians Section and has multiple educational programs and specialty conferences as well as the annual conference and expo. Membership requires association with a law enforcement agency.
National Association of EMS Physicians

“The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) provides leadership and fosters excellence in EMS medicine.” With an EMS focus and an annual meeting that has talks that include Tactical EMS (TEMS).
National Tactical Officer’s Association (NTOA)

“Improving public safety and domestic security through training, education and tactical excellence”. The NTOA features a TEMS section, a journal “The Tactical Edge”, educational programs, and conferences. Their annual operations conference also features a tradeshow. Joining NTOA does require providing agency credentials.
Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA)

“To advance the science, technology, knowledge and skills of unconventional medicine providers in order to increase survival, reduce suffering, and speed recovery of those who are injured or become ill during Special Operations or Tactical missions.” SOMA has the Journal of Special Operations Medicine and features their annual Special Operations Medicine Scientific Assembly in the Spring. Joining SOMA does not require specific credentials but pricing varies depending on your role and assignment.
Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)

Tactical and Law Enforcement Medicine Interest Group. “The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) creates and promotes scientific discovery, advancement of education, and the highest professional and ethical standards for clinicians, educators, and researchers.” The SAEM TaLEM Interest Group was founded in 2024 to provide a forum for TaLEM education and research within the Emergency Medicine educational community. The interest group has a meeting at the SAEM annual meeting and has sponsored didactic programs at this event. TaLEM Interest Group membership is free for any SAEM member.
Committee for Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (C-TECC)

C-TECC develops best practice guidelines for managing casualties in tactical environments, adapting military tactical combat casualty care principles for civilian use. They have two annual meetings, one at the SOMA spring assembly.

This month we saw a fantastic seminar: Field Ultrasound: A Life-Saving Modality for the Tactical Medicine Setting with a record turnout for the section.
On April 30th, the SCH Disaster Medicine Center International Symposium in South Korea will feature two ACEP Tactical and Law Enforcement Medicine Section speakers: Dominique Wong and Florian Schmitzberger. The symposium is organized by our very own Heejun Shin. The theme of the meeting is Tactical Counter-Terrorism and CBRNe Medicine: Lessons Learned and Future Directions for Both Governmental and Civilian Aspects.
