Councilor Report

  • Research-specific council agenda
  • Current Emergency Medicine Research Mentorship Program resolution pending presentation to the ACEP Council at Annual Meeting

Governance items

  • Open Position Elections
    • Councilor. Charles Kemmler nominated for councilor, and nomination was seconded. Charles was elected unanimously.
    • Alternate Councilor. Joshua Davis nominated for alternate councilor, and nomination was seconded. Joshua was elected unanimously.
    • Secretary / Newsletter Editor. Carol Clark was nominated for secretary, and nomination was seconded. Carol was elected unanimously.

Update on Section Activities

  • EFIC Primer
    • Text has been edited and submitted to the headquarters staff for copyediting and formatting. Ethics committee
  • Journal Club Primer
    • Looking to be complementary to Annals of Emergency Medicine Journal Club to create a guideline for establishing or improving a local journal club
    • Look to incorporate other sections including EMRA, CORD, YPS, EM Literature sections.
  • Database of Researchers
    • Section discussed potential to create a database of researchers, what work they are working on, and where their funding comes from.
  • ACEP Council Resolution
  • We are planning to submit a resolution to the ACEP Council Meeting. The Emergency Medicine Research Mentorship Program resolution will propose that the College, “adopt a resolution to create a formal Emergency Medicine research mentorship program and designate financial resources for its administrative support.”

Meeting Discussion / Announcements

  • Members are encouraged to review the RSI website (https://www.acep.org/rsai) for the latest news and section publications, including webinars, primers, and other educational resources. In between meetings, members can also connect with each other through the ACEP engagED communication platform (https://engaged.acep.org/home).
  • Methods for increasing involvement of RSI members in meetings were discussed.
  • Discussed the need for education of ACEP members on the various research-related entities within ACEP, including difference between RSI and Research Committee (i.e., possible webinar, ACEP Now article; etc)
  • Plans to reach out to other ACEP entities (e.g., sections, interest groups, committees) to collaborate on appropriate projects. Interest in collaborating with SAEM and other EM organizations on appropriate research-related projects as well.
    • James Paxton will reach out to ACEP Research Committee chair for her recommendations on which RC projects may require assistance from RSI section.
  • Feasibility of a "researcher database" to help match researchers with mentors / mentees / collaborators was discussed.
  • ACEP 2024 Scientific Assembly Research Forum deadline for abstracts is 30 April 2024

  • Meetings to be held every 2 months on the 2nd Wednesday of the month for the 2023-2024 academic year:

Section Objectives

  • Serve as a resource to the Board and the College regarding emergency medicine research.
  • Stimulate and encourage quality research in emergency medicine.
  • Promote education relating to research methodology, for the Section of the College.
  • Provide a forum for communication among researchers within the College, and to encourage that communication.
  • Promote collaboration among researchers in emergency medicine and related fields, to advance the specialty.
  • Serve as a resource regarding research training programs in emergency medicine.
