Al'ai Alvarez

MD, FACEP

Dr. Alvarez is a national leader and educator on wellness, diversity, equity, and Inclusion. His current roles at Stanford University include Clinical Associate Professor, Stanford Emergency Medicine; Director of Well-Being, Stanford Emergency Medicine; Co-lead, the Human Potential Team, Stanford Emergency Medicine; Fellowship Director, Physician Wellness Fellowship, Stanford Emergency Medicine; Chair, Physician Wellness Forum, Stanford WellMD/WellPhD; and Director, Physician Resource Network Support Program, Stanford WellMD/WellPhD. 

Dr. Alvarez dedicates his work to humanizing the roles of physicians, both as individuals and team members, by harnessing the individual human potential in the context of high-performance teams. This includes optimizing the interconnectedness between Process Improvement (Quality and Clinical Operations), Recruitment (Diversity), and Well-being (Inclusion). He is one of the 2021-22 Faculty Fellows at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign. 

Dr. Alvarez was the assistant/associate residency program director (APD) at the Stanford Emergency Medicine Residency Program (2016-21), focusing on the intersectionality of residency well-being with performance improvement on patient experience, quality and patient safety, diversity, equity and inclusion, and medical education.

Dr. Alvarez co-founded and co-chaired the largest diversity mentoring initiative to date in emergency medicine through ACEP and EMRA.

Dr. Alvarez regularly presents at grand rounds and both national and international conferences, offering lectures and workshops. His topics include self-compassion, physician well-being, high-performance teams, and the enhancement of leadership capacity and mentorship to foster representation and belonging. He actively promotes these discussions under the hashtags #doctorsarehumanstoo and #whatdoctorslooklike.
