Jay Kaplan

MD, FACEP

Dr. Kaplan is an attending physician in the emergency departments of Boundary District Hospital in Grand Forks, British Columbia, and Castlegar and District Community Health Centre in Castlegar, British Columbia.

He practiced emergency medicine for more than 43 years in the United States and has been a physician coach, consultant, and mentor for more than 25 years. From January 2018 to May 2022, Dr. Kaplan was Medical Director of Care Transformation and Director of the Be Well Center for LCMC Health in New Orleans, La., Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in Emergency Medicine at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and academic faculty for the LSU Emergency Medicine Residency at University Medical Center.  He is now Clinical Instructor in Emergency Medicine for the University of British Columbia, based in Vancouver, BC.

Dr. Kaplan is Past President of ACEP and a member of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Healthcare Worker Well-Being and Resilience. Dr. Kaplan previously served as Medical Director of Studer Group, and in 2021, was named the ACEP John G. Wiegenstein Leadership award winner, ACEP’s highest award.

As an international speaker and facilitator, Dr. Kaplan has presented to and coached hospital and physician leaders, medical groups, emergency departments, and individual physicians in all states in the U.S. and four Canadian provinces. His approach remains tactical and directed toward improved outcomes for both patients and clinicians, emphasizing the importance of teamwork.
