Why Does Diversity Matter?

Fostering broad and inclusive participation in ACEP’s efforts enhances the array of thoughtful and innovative ideas brought forth, mitigates unconscious bias, and directly increases the likelihood of future success for our College and specialty.

The Numbers

US Population - 51% women, 38% minorities 

Medical School Students - 45% women, 44% minorities 

EM residents  - 38% women, 34% minorities

Women who are:

  • Active ACEP members - 25% 
  • ACEP Council - 27% 
  • ACEP Board - 33% 

Minorities who are:

  • Active ACEP members – 1% black, 1.5% Hispanic 
  • ACEP leadership positions – less than 1%

"When one further considers that our nation has even more religious, cultural, sexual, gender identity, and other forms of diversity—far beyond the obvious visual distinctions—it is apparent that the magnitude of the opportunity for improvement is enormous."
