Chair's Corner

As September continues to march along and ACEP22 draws near, we look forward to our AAWEP Section meeting so that we can gather together to share ideas and form bonds. During this collective experience, we will peer into our own minds and explore the minds of other Women Emergency Physicians (WEPs). Our Section meeting is Saturday, October 1st from 1:00 to 3:00 PM PST Hilton Union Square Hotel in Yosemite C Ballroom. We sincerely hope to see you there! Your AAWEP Executive Committee has put together an excellent list of speakers.

Dr. Cherri Hobgood joins us from University of North Carolina. She will present Barriers, Challenges, and Solutions to Gender Equity in Emergency Medicine. In this presentation, she will reveal data from a multiyear study of women leaders in emergency medicine to identify barriers and challenges perpetuating and maintaining gender inequity. She will also discuss solutions to enact along the career trajectory to create a more gender-diverse workplace and support the advancement of women. Dr. Hobgood is a past ACEP board chair, past president of SAEM, and an emeritus department chair; she is clearly an outstanding and experienced leader for women in emergency medicine.

Dr. Linda Lawrence brings her experience and perspective from Northeast Ohio Medical University and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences to present Career Agility: Key to a Fulfilling Career. Dr. Lawrence is a past president of ACEP, a certified executive coach, a leadership development expert, and a fellow emergency physician. She will present the familiar topic of burnout in WEPs and the uncertainty it raises in our future clinical careers. With her wisdom and experience, she will allow us to reimagine our careers, identify our priorities, and reframe any constricting or limiting beliefs around career changes. This presentation will explore key actions to begin the journey of regaining control of our lives, enhancing our feelings of empowerment and confidence.

Have you considered running for political office? Are you looking for ways to be more involved in politics at the local or national level? Dr. Niki Tran is presenting her unique perspective fresh off the campaign trail. She will discuss her beyond rewarding experiences running for public office in Why I Ran for Office & Why You Should Too. Dr. Tran joins us from Gifford Medical Center in Vermont where she works 100% clinically while also serving as president of the Vermont Chapter of ACEP.

Our speakers and presentations are focused on broadening your mind and bettering your mindset, life, and career overall. The speakers are inspirational, and we truly hope you enjoy our section meeting. See you soon!
